Housing policies can reproduce rather than reduce inequality — for example, when tax benefits disproportionately favour affluent homeowners while low- and middle-income households face growing competition for scarce and insecure rental housing. This is why housing debates need broader representation from across society and civil society organisations, so that the diversity of experiences of the housing crisis is heard and can inform fairer solutions.
